The past few years there has been a big push for people to support small, local businesses. This movement is all over the US and across the world. But why should we support local? There are legitimate reasons to do so.

You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy LOCAL and that’s kinda the same thing.

One of the most known reasons is supporting the local economy. Buying from local businesses means the money you spend is supporting local families, and cycling back through the local economy. This is pretty straightforward, but what other reasons could there be? Supporting local businesses, especially farms and ranches, can improve your health. Foods are fresher when they’re local, you’re getting fruits and vegetables as soon as they are picked at the peak of perfection, whereas with large retailers produce is picked before it’s ripe and shipped across the country before it gets to your local store.

If you’ve ever had an issue with a product from a locally owned company, I’d almost bet they made it right ASAP. That’s another benefit of shopping local, the quality of service is a lot higher than big box stores. It’s more personalized and the owners truly care that you are happy, because they rely on repeat customers. Big box stores can afford to lose a few customers over poor service, but the small guys, they depend on their customers to be happy and coming back.

Service is one of the most important factors people consider when deciding what business to purchase from, so small businesses go above and beyond what is required of them. Have you ever sent a message through social media to a locally owned shop? They’re usually pretty good about getting back to you in a timely manner and will help you shop before you even step foot in the door. Big businesses won’t do that, they don’t have the time or the man-power. But small businesses don’t have to worry about managing hundreds of employees and can instead focus on their customers and helping them find exactly what they are looking for. Local businesses are also a lot more likely to support local causes than the larger stores. They like giving back to the community that makes them successful, and sometimes giving back can lead to more customers, so it’s a win-win for everyone!
